IBN: From Design Office to Integrated Timber Builder

IBN expanded from timber design consulting into manufacturing, installation and timber construction, then invested in workshops and equipment. Revenue rose from approximately €2.90 million in 2022 to €4.58 million in 2025, while EBITDA increased from approximately €158,000 to €482,000.
BEFOREIn 2013, IBN began as a timber construction design office operating from a family home, with its focus initially on design and consulting.
AFTERBy 2025, IBN had approximately 1,500 square metres of workshop space and reported approximately €4.58 million in revenue, with continuous growth from 2022 to 2025.
OUTCOMESuccess
MODELIBN serves businesses, public institutions and individuals with timber and interior fitting design, manufacturing and on-site installation, as well as the design and construction of timber houses, extensions and additional floors. Revenue mainly comes from project-based engineering services and delivery of customized timber products.

Full Story

Background & Opportunity

IBN’s case illustrates how a specialist design business can broaden its role when customers seek a more complete delivery partner. Founded by David Noroy and Marie-Pierre Noroy in 2013, the company started as a timber construction design office operating from a family home. Its initial emphasis was design and consulting. Over time, however, the business expanded into interior timber-product manufacturing and installation, and then into timber extensions, additional floors and residential construction. The strategic change was not simply the addition of services: it moved IBN closer to responsibility for the finished project. The operating model then had to support this wider promise. IBN built two manufacturing workshops, the first completed in 2019 and the second in 2021. A Grand Besançon official magazine interview in 2022 reported that the company had grown from 2 people at founding to 15 employees and was operating in two self-built buildings in the Marchaux industrial area. The company also presents Qualibat 2351 for timber structures and Qualibat 4322 for joinery and fitting, while emphasizing locally sourced timber. Capacity and organization continued to develop. Between December 2024 and January 2025, IBN added 130 square metres, taking total workshop space to approximately 1,500 square metres. The new area was used to store temperature- and humidity-sensitive materials and finished products safely, releasing production space. Pappers lists revenue growth from approximately €2.90 million in 2022 to €4.58 million in 2025, while EBITDA rose from approximately €158,000 to €482,000. Net profit increased from approximately €84,500 to €286,000. IBN also received the Les Champions de la Croissance 2023 certification for growth during 2018–2021. These facts show transformation and growth occurring together, but do not establish that workshop expansion alone caused the financial results.

Original Problem / Model

The starting constraint was a design-led model that could not fully capture demand for complete delivery.

Turning Point

IBN broadened into timber manufacturing, installation, extensions, additional floors and homes.

Core Decision

Two self-built workshops converted engineering capability into owned production capacity.

Execution / Model / Acquisition Changes

The 2024–2025 addition of 130 square metres brought total workshop space to approximately 1,500 square metres.

Measurable Results

Qualibat qualifications and local timber sourcing reinforced trust and differentiation in customized projects.

Lessons

The evidence supports strategic association with growth, while stopping short of proving single-cause attribution.

Design, manufacturing and installation

Deep Analysis

IBN responded to customer demand by extending its design capability into manufacturing, installation and timber construction. The two workshops, later expanded to approximately 1,500 square metres, supported control over delivery and customized output. Qualibat qualifications, project experience and local timber sourcing strengthened differentiation. Revenue increased from approximately €2.90 million in 2022 to €4.58 million in 2025, while EBITDA increased from approximately €158,000 to €482,000. The evidence supports a strong association between integration, capacity development and growth, but not a claim that workshop investment alone caused the financial performance.

Turning Point

IBN expanded from a timber design office into manufacturing, installation and timber construction, then built and expanded workshops to support delivery.

Before vs After

Before
Design and consulting from a family-home office, with limited control over manufacturing and installation.
After
Integrated design, manufacturing and installation supported by two workshops and approximately 1,500 square metres of space.
